Lieutenant Colonel Henry W. Stokes was commissioned in the rank of Lieutenant, December 1881; Captain, December 1883; Major, August 1896; and Lieutenant Colonel, 1900. He was additionally entitled to the Volunteer Officers’ Decoration.
