Bertie Walter Richard Gardiner was born on 16 May 1885 at Hawkwell, Essex. A draper’s assistant, he entered the Royal Navy in 1904. Present at the battle of Jutland, he served aboard the fast battleship H.M.S.
Malaya, who with her sister ships formed part of the 5th Battle Squadron, attached to the battlecruiser squadrons commanded by Vice-Admiral Beatty. The ships of the squadron were heavily engaged, in particular during the ‘run to the north’ when the Malaya and Warspite were under heavy fire from Scheer’s battleships. During the course of the battle, Malaya received seven hits from large projectiles and suffered 67 killed and 33 wounded. In the Second World War, Gardiner was 2nd Lieutenant and 2nd in command of the Hockley Platoon, Rayleigh Company 1 / Essex Home Guard. Sold with copied service paper and some photographs.
