Hector James Thornton was a planter and served in the Malay States Volunteer Rifles, 1910-14, before enlisting in January 1915 as a Private in the 10th Battalion Royal Fusiliers. In November the same year he was discharged to be appointed to a temporary commission in the 3rd Battalion Suffolk Regiment. 2nd Lieutenant Thornton was invalided to England in January 1917 suffering from bronchitis and again in the following year, with rheumatism.
