Sold with a letter from the recipient (dated1968) giving some service details; together with original French service book (fragmentary) which confirms the two French awards; award document for the Colonial Medal (1933), two French identity cards and a quantity of postcards and photographs re. the recipient’s French service.

Thomas G. Sturgis served in the Machine Gun Corps during the Great War and, according to the recipient, served in N.W. Russia, Egypt, Palestine and India. In 1931 he joined the French Foreign Legion under the name of ‘Davies’. Enlisting at Dunkirk and training in Algiers, he served in Morocco with the 3rd Regiment. Promoted Corporal in 1933, he served in the Foreign Legion for five years. During the Second World War he served as a Fireman in England.
