H. A. Sheppard was commissioned as an Engineer Sub Lieutenant on 10 August 1914 and his commission was terminated on 1 July 1917. He is believed to have served mostly aboard the Armed Merchant Cruiser H.M.S. Marmora; which ship was sunk by the submarine UB.64 on 23 July 1918.
