Montagu Henry Edmund Cecil Towneley-Bertie was born on 2 November 1887, the only son of Lord Norreys (1860-1919), the eldest son and heir apparent of the 7th Earl of Abingdon (1836-1928). Educated at Eton, 1901-04. He entered the Royal Anglesey R.E. (Militia) as a 2nd Lieutenant in 1905, was promoted Lieutenant in 1907 and Captain in 1915. The same year he transferred to the Grenadier Guards with the rank of Lieutenant. Serving with the Guards, he was twice wounded (13 September 1916 and 10 May 1918). Promoted Temporary Captain in August 1918, he was demobilised in February 1919. During the period of war service with the Royal Engineers, he was seconded as a Flight Lieutenant with the Royal Naval Air Service. He succeeded his grandfather as 8th Earl of Abingdon in 1928 and succeded to the title of 13th Earl of Lindsey in 1938. He died in 1963. Sold with 17 copied sheets of service papers and other copied research details.
