Charles Cole was born in Cirencester, Gloucestershire and enlisted into the Life Guards in 1884 and gained the rank of Squadron Quarter Master Corporal in 1896. For the Second Boer War he was seconded to the 37th (Buckinghamshire) Company, 10th Battalion Imperial Yeomanry. He served with them in South Africa between 10 February and 29 November 1900, being wounded at Spitz Kop, near Boshof on 5 April 1900 and was later invalided due to Enteric fever. Resuming service with the Life Guards after the war, he was awarded the L.S. Medal in 1903 and gained Warrant rank in 1904. He was discharged with a pension in 1911. The same year he was commissioned as Quartermaster in the Royal Bucks Hussars. In September 1914 he attained the rank of Captain. Sold with 32 sheets of copied service papers etc.
