Charles Payne was born in Ipswich, Suffolk and attested for the Royal Artillery in 1887, aged 18 years. He served with the Artillery until 1893 when he was transferred to the Commissariat Department. Payne served with them in N.W. India where he was mentioned in despatches; in South Africa and in the Tibet expedition; being promoted Sub Conductor in 1900 and Conductor in 1903. In the Great War he attained the rank of Major and was again metioned in despatches. Payne died in 1953. Sold with copied service papers.
