Alfred Winchester was born in the Parish of Polegate, Eastbourne, Sussex. A gardener by trade, he attested for the Royal Sussex Regiment in 1892. Serving with the regiment in South Africa, he received a slight gunshot wound to the right foot at Retiefs Nek, 23 July 1900. He was discharged on 30 April 1902 as medically unfit for further service. Sold with copied service papers.
