Maurice Frederick Lathy was born at Tillington, Sussex on 3 January 1869. He was educated at Portsmouth Grammar School and St. Catherine’s College, Oxford, attaining a B.A. in 1889 and a M.A. in 1893. He was granted the temporary rank of Captain on 10 March 1900 when the Volunteer Company left England for South Africa.
