George Lanning was born in Poplar, London and enlisted in the 16th Regiment in 1861, aged 14 years. He served with the regiment in Canada during 1861-70 and transferred to the Royal Artillery in 1872. He was discharged in 1882 on completion of his second period of limited engagement. Sold with copied service papers.
