Sidney James Batten was born in Dawlish Wake and enlisted at Taunton, Somerset. He served initially with the Royal Horse and Royal Field Artillery before joining the 9th Battalion Essex Regiment. Batten was killed in action in France on 18 October 1916. Having no known grave, his name is commemorated on the Thiepval Memorial and in Dawlish Wake Church.
