William Edward Warren was born at Redfield, Bristol in 1850 and enlisted into the Royal Artillery in 1868. In 1870 when stationed in India, he was selected to act as Footman to H.R.H. The Duke of Edinburgh at the opening of the station at Jubbulpore. He served with ‘N’ Battery 5th Brigade R.A. in the Kaffir Wars of 1877-78 and then in the Zulu War of 1879, being present at the battle of Ulundi. He was still in South Africa at the time of the First Boer War 1880-81. In 1885 he was transferred to the 1st Essex Artillery Volunteers as an instructor and in 1887 was awarded the Army L.S.& G.C. He was discharged in 1898. With the outbreak of the Great War he was appointed Superintendent of Recruiting for Grays and district, and accepting a commission in his 65th year in 1915, he was promoted Captain in 1916. He died in 1932. Sold with copied service papers and obituary.
