John Allen was born in Chingford, Essex and enlisted into the Essex Regiment in 1884, aged 21 years. He served with the regiment in Egypt 1885-87, India 1892-97 and South Africa 1899-1900. He was severely wounded at Driefontein on 10 March 1900. Allen was discharged at his own request in 1905. Sold with copied service papers.
