Joseph Harris was born near Colchester and enlisted into the Essex Regiment in 1890. He was on home service until transferred to the Reserve in 1895. Recalled to the 1st Battalion Essex Regiment in November 1899, he served in South Africa, 11 November 1899 - 8 April 1900. He received a gunshot wound at Wolvekraal on 11 February 1900 which rendered him unfit for further service. He was discharged in September 1900. Sold with copied service papers.
