George Stallard was born on 14 January 1856, the fifth son of Josiah Stallard, of Worcester. He was educated at Rossal, and at Emmanuel College, Cambridge, and London University, where he read law. He took the LL.B. degree at Cambridge in 1878, and was called to the Bar at the Inner Temple in the following year. He went out to West Africa as private secretary to the Governor of Lagos, Sir Alfred Maloney, and he afterwards became Queen’s Advocate of Lagos. In 1897 he was appointed Chief Justice of Sierra Leone, and on his retirement in 1907 he was offered a knighthood which, however, he declined. He served in the Jebu campaign in 1892, and was mentioned in despatches and awarded the medal. George Stallard died at North Tawton on 21 August 1912.
