William FitzErembald (the son of Erebald) was the moneyer at both Carlisle and Newcastle for Henry II’s Tealby coinage from 1158 to 1180, often using the obverse dies indiscriminately at either mint. The notable thing about the coins from Carlisle and Newcastle is that they are round, unlike many coins of the issue, and are relatively well struck. During the period of the Tealby coinage he also farmed the North Pennine silver mines – at first successfully, being able to pay the annual farm which gradually increased from 100 marks ( £66 13s 4d ) in 1158 to 500 marks (£333 6s 8d) in 1166.
