William Norman, 23 Eldon place, Newcastle-upon-Tyne (fl. 1908), was one of the pre-eminent token collectors in the last quarter of the 19th century. His original interest in the 1870s was the 17th century series, but by the end of that decade he started to acquire 18th and 19th century tokens, almost all in the best possible condition; many of them are contained within the portion of the Cokayne collection being sold in this auction. The Norman collection was dispersed in four sales at Sotheby’s between 1903 and 1908
