M.C. London Gazette 2 December 1918: ‘For conspicuous gallantry and good leadership during two days’ fighting. He skilfully carried out a difficult relief in close proximity to the enemy. Later, he led his men in an attack with great ability, and his coolness under fire was an inspiration to all ranks.’

John Everitt Smitham, who was born in Wigtownshire in May 1880, was commissioned into the Liverpool Irish in 1910, direct from the 5th Battalion, Liverpool Regiment,with whom he had served as a Colour-Sergeant. Following active service in France and Flanders from February 1917 until October 1918, Smitham rose to the command of the Liverpool Irish, finally relinquishing his Lieutenant-Colonel’s commission in December 1920.
