Harold Atkinson was born in Liverpool in October 1898 and entered the Royal Navy as a Boy 2nd Class at the training establishment Powerful in March 1915. His first proper seagoing appointment was aboard the battleship H.M.S. Revenge between February 1916 and June 1918, during which time he was advanced to Able Seaman and present at the Battle of Jutland. Atkinson was awarded his L.S. & G.C. Medal in November 1931, while serving ashore at the A/S school Osprey at Portland.
