Frank Pinnick was born in Plymouth in September 1894 and entered the Royal Navy as a Stoker 2nd Class in September 1913. The outbreak of hostilities in August 1914 found him serving in the cruiser H.M.S. Argyll and he was still aboard her when she was wrecked on Bell Rock, near Dundee on 28 August 1915. In spite of the heavy sea running at the time the whole crew was rescued by destroyers. Next appointed to the destroyer Roebuck, Pinnick would appear to have served in the same ship until May 1918, latterly as an Acting Leading Stoker. His final wartime appointment was in sloop Windflower. Advanced to Stoker Petty Officer in July 1926, Pinnick was awarded his L.S. & G.C. Medal in December 1928.
