Turkey, Visit of Kaisar Wilhelm II Medal 1889, 29.5mm., gold, complete with suspension and top bars and with original ribbon, extremely fine £1200-1400

Provenance: Purchased by the vendor directly from the Bismarck family.

A total of 4 large (65mm.) and 100 small (29.5mm) gold , 200 silver and 1,100 bronze medals were struck. Of the large medals, one each was presented to the Emperor, the Empress and Bismarck and one was retained by Sultan Abdul Hamid II. The large gold medal presented to Bismarck is now most probably with his other insignia held by the state. The small gold medal (above) may well have been awarded to another member of his family or held by the Chancellor for future presentation.
