George William Chinnick was born at Mile End, London in November 1898 and entered the Royal Navy as a Boy 2nd Class in July 1915. His first seagoing appointment, between June 1916 and April 1917, was in the battleship H.M.S. Swiftsure and he was advanced to Able Seaman in the latter year. Chinnick next served in the aircraft carrier Furious, from July to October 1917, and again from February to December 1918, his inter-war career including yet another tour aboard the same ship in the mid-1920s. He was awarded his L.S. & G.C. Medal January 1933, while serving ashore at Victory, the Portsmouth shore establishment.
