Harold Richard Pym was born in South Shields in March 1900 and entered the Royal Navy direct from Greenwich School as a Boy 2nd Class in September 1915. Having attended the training establishment Ganges, he joined the battleship H.M.S. Queen in April 1916, and served in her until February of the following year, when he came ashore to Victory I. Then in March 1917, he commenced his final wartime seagoing appointment aboard the cruiser Minotaur. Pym was advanced to Leading Seaman in 1921 and to Petty Officer in April 1927, and received his L.S. & G.C. Medal in April 1933, while serving in the Egmont, a depot ship at Malta.
