George Frederick Walker was born in Sherness, Kent in May 1858 and entered the Royal Navy as a Lamptrimmer aboard H.M.S. Duke of Wellington in December 1876. Transferred a few days later to the Euphrates, he went on to serve in her off South Africa and, in the Inconstant, off Egypt in 1882. Walker was discharged, still as a Lamptrimmer, in September of the latter year.
