Ashantee 1873-74, no clasp (J. Bartlett, Pte., R.M., H.M.S. Active 73-74) edge nicks, very fine £100-120

James Bartlett was born in Devizes, Wiltshire in December 1831 and entered the Royal Marines in February 1858, aged 26 years. He had previously served in the Royal Wiltshire Militia. In his subsequent career of 21 years, four of them were spent afloat, including time in H.M.S. Active during the Ashantee operations of 1873-74, although he was invalided home from the Gold Coast in February of the latter year. Bartlett, who was awarded the L.S. & G.C. Medal in September 1876, was discharged in March 1878.
