Africa General Service 1902-56, 1 clasp, Shimber Berris 1914-15 (212 Sepoy Amir Khan, Ind. Con. 1/K.A.R.) lacquered, very fine £120-140

For operations against the Mullah, under Lieutenant-Colonel T. Ashley Cubitt, D.S.O., Royal Field Artillery.

Undoubtedly the highlight of the campaign was an attack launched against one of the Mullah’s recently constructed forts, the irrepressible Captain (afterwards Lieutenant-General Sir, V.C.) Adrian Carton de Wiart, 4th Dragoon Guards, collecting some serious wounds in the process:

‘The first Dervish bullet passed through his shirt sleeve, another struck him in the eye, the next in the elbow, and yet another split his ear. Seething with rage, he continued to waggle his cane at the Dervishes until reluctantly he accepted the order to retire. His eye was removed back in London at 17 Park Lane, an establishment he would be obliged to visit with alarming regularity over the next few years ...’
