John Horn enlisted in the 24th Foot in Preston District in June 1869, aged 18 years. He subsequently served with the regiment on Malta from 1870-72, in Gibraltar from 1872-74, in Cape Town from 1875-76, on St. Helena from 1876-77, and thereafter back in South Africa, where he was killed in action at Isandhlwana on 22 January 1879. His effects were recorded for claim by his next of kin.
