Hammer Price:
£7,000

Indian Order of Merit, Military Division,1st type (1837-1912), Reward of Valor, 1st Class, 18 carat gold and enamel, the reverse officially engraved in three lines ‘1st Class Order of Merit’, and ‘18 Ct.’ over maker’s mark ‘ISH’ with crown over, for J. S. Hunt, complete with gold ribbon buckle, extremely fine and very rare £2000-2500

Only 42 awards of the 1st Class Order of Merit were made between 1837 and 1912. As examples of the 2nd and 3rd classes are known by John S. Hunt with London silver hallmarks for 1858, this example is almost certainly of the same period.
