Sohan Singh served on the North West Frontier of India in the Hazara expedition of 1888. He was one of 14 men of the regiment to serve in Central Africa when they took part in the Mlanje, Makanjira, and Chirodzulu expeditions between August and December 1893. He next served with the 24th on the North West Frontier of India in 1897-98, including the defence of Malakand, relief of Chakdara, Malakand, action at Landikai, and operations in Bajour and in the Mamund country. Sohan Singh, now promoted to Naick, finally served in China in 1900, including the actions at Peitsang and Yangtsun, and the relief of Pekin.
