Henry Gent was born at Manchester and enlisted for the 51st Foot at Aldershot on 10 December 1875, a volunteer from the 3rd West York Militia, then aged 23 years 5 months. He served in the East Indies from January 1877 to February 1882, including the Jowaki Campaign of December 1877, and the Afghan Campaign 1878-79, during which he was present at the action at Ali Musjid on 21 November 1878. Sold with copy discharge papers which confirm both medals.
