George Woolner was born in 1818, a native of Beccles, Suffolk, and enlisted at Westminster on 31 May 1840 for the Bengal Foot Artillery. He arrived in India on 10 December 1840, aboard the Earl Hardwicke, and was posted to the 4th Battalion. During his service he was several times promoted and demoted in the ranks of Bombardier, Corporal and Sergeant, and in 1860 was Drill Corporal on the Staff of the 4th Battalion. In 1861, upon disbandment of the H.E.I.C. Forces, Woolner transferred to the British Army.
