George Augustus Way was born at Great Yeldham, Essex, on 6 March 1837, eldest son of Rev. C. J. Way. He was educated at Eton and joined the 58th Bengal Native Infantry in 1855. He served in the Mahsud Waziri Expedition in 1860, and was present at the action of the Berara heights. Attached to 38th N.I. 1865-68; Station Staff Officer, Jubulpore and Saugor, 1868-73; officiating 7th N.I. 1877-78, and 4th N.I. 1879; Assistant Adjutant General, Bengal, 1879-84. Served on the Akha Expedition 1883-84, was mentioned in Brigadier-General R. S. Hill’s despatch of 31 January 1884, and later wrote a book on this expedition entitled Looshi and Akha. Promoted Colonel in 1885, he was subsequently Commandant of the 7th Bengal Native Infantry until 1892, and was created a Companion of the Bath in 1896. Colonel Way died at Spaynes Hall, Great Yeldham, Essex, on 19 October 1899.
