Roman Imperial Coinage, Severus Alexander, medallion, Rome, 231, imp sev alexander avg, laureate and draped bust right, rev. fides milttvm, Jupiter naked standing front, head left, holding thunderbolt in right hand and long sceptre in left, Emperor helmeted, in military dress, stands facing him, sacrificing out of a patera over a tripod and holding a spear in left hand, being crowned by Virtus helmeted, in military dress, standing behind him, shield and standard in field, 9.86g (RIC –; BMC VI, p.186, 727; BMCRM p.39, no. 7; Gnecchi III, pl. 152, no. 15). Very fine and very rare £1,000-£1,500

Provenance: A recent find from Yorkshire: PAS: YORKM-AED2AF.

Just seven such medallions are currently recorded with PAS; this example is the first of Severus Alexander and the first from the first half of the 3rd century. Two medallions of this type and module are in the British Museum, both from different dies to the present piece
