A Great War D.S.O. group of six awarded to Lieutenant Colonel F. B. Nixon, 6th Inniskilling Dragoons, attached 10th Duke of Cambridge’s Own Lancers (Hodson’s Horse)

Distinguished Service Order, G.V.R., silver-gilt and enamel, with integral top riband bar, obverse central medallion loose; Queen’s South Africa 1899-1902, 5 clasps, Cape Colony, Orange Free State, Transvaal, South Africa 1901, South Africa 1902 (Lieut: F. B. Nixon, 6/Drgns.); 1914-15 Star (Lieut: F. B. Nixon, 6/Dns.); British War and Victory Medals, with M.I.D. oak leaves (Major. F. B. Nixon.) Delhi Durbar 1911, silver, unnamed as issued, mounted court-style; together with the corresponding set of six related miniature awards, very fine and better (6) £1,000-£1,400

Fergus Brinsley Nixon was born in Seafield, Westward Ho!, on 16 October 1880. Educated at United Service College, Westward Ho!, he was commissioned Second Lieutenant in the 6th Inniskilling Dragoons on 18 August 1900. During the Boer War, he served on the Staff and took part in the operations in the Transvaal and Orange River Colony, June 1901 until the end of May 1902. Promoted Lieutenant on 8 February 1902, he served as Adjutant to the Regiment between 1 August 1903 and 31 July 1906. Promoted Captain on 4 May 1907, he served as Adjutant of the West Kent (Queen’s Own) Yeomanry from 15 July 1912. During the Great War, Captain Nixon served on the Western Front from March 1915, and was seconded to the 10th Duke of Cambridge’s Own Lancers (Hodson’s Horse) from 2 January 1916. Hodson’s Horse served in Mesopotamia from August 1916 and although it is not known how long his served with this regiment, he had been promoted Major by the time he was awarded the D.S.O in June 1918.
