Herbert Allen, a native of Gravesend, Kent, attested for the Royal West Kent Regiment and served with the 10th Battalion during the Great War on the Western Front. He died, from wounds received at La Bassee, in Dudley Road Hospital, Birmingham, on 21 July 1916, after six operations, and is buried in Gravesend Cemetery.

he Gravesend Recorder ‘A Hero’s last wish’ detailing his injuries; a letter from a Padre with the British Expeditionary Force; and a further article ‘Died after six operations’, which includes a list who attended his funeral.
