William Rankin was born in Docking, Essex, and attested for the Oxfordshire and Buckinghamshire Light Infantry at Upper Tooting, Surrey. He served with the 1st Battalion during the Great War in Mesopotamia, in the Hedjaz theatre of War, from 5 December 1914, and was killed in action at the defence of Kut-al-Amarah on 24 December 1915. He is buried in the Kut War Cemetery, Iraq.
