William Steggles, aged 18 from London, attested for the Royal Berkshire Regiment on 5 September 1914, and served with the 1st Battalion during the Great War on the Western Front from 7 April 1915. He served with the British Expeditionary Force in France, North Russia, and in Mesopotamia, and was twice wounded, on 13 November 1916 and again on 11 August 1918. He transferred to the 10th Tank Corps on 20 June 1919, and was awarded his Long Service and Good Conduct Medal in 1935.
