William James Whittle served as an Engine Room Artificer Second Class in the Royal Navy during the Second World War in H.M.S. Rothesay, a Bangor Class Minesweeper. Transferring to the civilian side of the Royal Navy following the cessation of hostilities, he was awarded his Imperial Service Medal in 1976 upon his retirement as a Laboratory Mechanic, having latterly worked for the Ministry of Defence (London Gazette 14 September 1976).

Sold with the recipient’s cap badge and riband bar; named Buckingham Palace enclosure for the D.S.M.; Mentioned in Despatches certificate, in original envelope; and Imperial Service Medal certificate, in original envelope.
