Robert William Armstrong was born in Manchester on 5 April 1887, and joined the Royal Navy as a Boy Second Class on 5 September 1902. Advanced Ordinary Seaman whilst serving in H.M.S. Fox, and promoted Able Seaman on 23 May 1907, whilst serving in H.M.S. Cochrane, he joined H.M.S. Russell on 27 December 1912, and served in her throughout the Great War. He was shore pensioned on 14 April 1919, and joined the Royal Fleet Reserve the following day.
