Charles Stachini was born in Edinburgh on the 6 February 1861 and joined the Royal Marines on the 6 February 1883. Initially serving with the Portsmouth Division, he served with the Royal Marine Battalion in Egypt from 16 September 1884 until 16 May 1885, taking part in the operations at Saukin and the battle of Tofrek. Posted back to the Portsmouth Division, his subsequently served afloat, with times in between back at Portsmouth, in H.M. Ships Hercules, Volage, Asia, and Kingfisher, joining the latter ship on 27 November 1889, and serving in her during the Witu campaign. Leaving this ship on 5 August 1891, he was invalided from the service on 14 March 1894. He subsequently enrolled in the Royal Fleet Reserve in January 1903, and was recalled to service at the outbreak of the Great War.
