A Great War 1918 ‘Second Battle of Bapaume’ M.M. awarded to Sergeant R. C. Evans, 3rd Field Ambulance, New Zealand Army Medical Corps, New Zealand Expeditionary Force, who was also wounded in action during the battle, 26 August 1918

M.M. London Gazette 24 January 1919. The original recommendation states:

‘Action before Favrueil, north of Bapaume on 25th August 1918 and on subsequent days. On the 25th August 1918 and on days following he was in charge of bearers in the forward areas. For 48 hours, he remained continuously on duty directing the squad of stretcher bearers. His coolness, energy and endurance was a splendid example to his men.’

Richard Carrick Evans attested for the New Zealand Expeditionary Force in September 1915. He served with the 3rd Field Ambulance, New Zealand Army Medical Corps in the Egyptian and French theatres of war. Evans was awarded his M.M. for gallantry during the Second Battle of Bapaume, and was wounded in action, 26 August 1918. He returned to New Zealand in the S.S. Rimutaka, 5 April 1919, and was discharged 25 June 1919.
