Three: Sergeant John Whibdy, 43rd Foot

South Africa 1834-53 (Corpl. J. Whibdy. 43rd Regt.); Indian Mutiny 1857-59, no clasp (Serjt. John Whibdy, 43rd Lt. Infy.); New Zealand 1845-66, reverse undated(1923. Sergt. John Whibdy, 43rd Regt.) mounted for wearing, light contact marks, otherwise very fine or better (3) £1,400-£1,600

John Whibdy was born in the Parish of Stevenage, Hertfordshire, and attested for the 43rd Foot at Hertford on 25 July 1842. He served 2 years 2 months at the Cape of Good Hope, taking part in the Kaffir War of 1850-53, in the East Indies 9 years 11 months, taking part in the Indian Mutiny of 1857-59, and in New Zealand for 2 years 7 months, taking part in the campaigns of 1860-66. He was promoted to Corporal in July 1853 and to Sergeant in November 1854, being appointed Hospital Sergeant from January 1861 to October 1863. He was tried and imprisoned for drunkenness, 7-11 October 1863, and to be reduced to the ranks, but this latter sentence was remitted and he continued as a Sergeant until his discharge on 18 September 1866.
