Joseph Walker was born in Staindrop, co. Durham, and attested for the Durham Light Infantry at Darlington. He served with the 10th Battalion during the Great War on the Western Front, and was killed in action on 10 April 1917, aged 31. He is buried in Tilloy British Cemetery, Tilloy-Les-Mofflaines, France.
