China 1857-60, no clasp (Geo. Johnston.) with top silver riband buckle, area of erasure before name, otherwise good very fine £100-£140

George Johnston was born in Mullingar, West Meath, on 15 July 1834, and attested there for the 45th Regiment of Foot on 15 July 1848, aged 14. He was promoted Corporal on 7 August 1861, before transferring to the 99th Regiment of Foot on 1 May 1862. He was appointed Drum Major on 31 December 1863, and was promoted Sergeant on 1 March 1872. He transferred to the Carlow Militia on 7 April 1872, and was discharged on 29 July 1873, after 21 years and 16 days’ service, of which 16 months were spent in China, and 14 years and 3 months in South Africa.
