Henry Joseph Janes was the son of Mr and Mrs Janes of 15 Hamble Street, Fulham, London. He served during the Great War with the 1st Battalion, East Surrey Regiment in the French theatre of war from 16 August 1914 (entitled to clasp). Janes was killed in action on the Western Front, 23 July 1916. On the latter date the Battalion were engaged as part of the 95th Brigade, 5th Division on the Somme, ‘moved forward to positions in and west of Longueval (19/7) - heavy casualties noted from shelling until (22/7). Attacked (23/7) - strong point captured west of northern end of Longueval but evacuated after counter attacks. Relieved during night to trenches near Montauban.
