Three: Captain H. C. Harris, 6th (Service) Battalion, Royal West Kent Regiment, killed in action on the Somme, 3 July 1916

Herbert Cecil Harris served during the Great War with the 6th (Service) Battalion, Royal West Kent Regiment in French theatre of war from 1 June 1915. He was killed in action on the Western Front, 3 July 1916. On the latter date the Battalion were serving as part of the 37th Brigade, 12th (Eastern) Division on the Somme, ‘Moved from Bresle to Millencourt in reserve (1/7) - during night to trenches just west of Ovillers. In action (3/7) - ‘A’ and ‘C’ Companies went forward 3.15am on left flank and under heavy machine gun fire reach German front line in front of village. ‘B’ and ‘D’ following suffered high casualties and could not force attack through to second line. Withdrew 7am and in evening to Bouzincourt. Casualties - 394.’ (British Battalions on the Somme by R. Westlake refers)

Captain Harris is commemorated on the Thiepval Memorial, Somme, France.
