Naval Good Shooting Medal, G.V.R. (226081 R. E. Groundsell, A.B., H.M.S. Bonetta. 1911. 12 Pr. Q.F.) very fine £280-£320

A unique award to H.M.S. Bonetta.

Reginald Ernest Groundsell was born at Bosham, Sussex, on 5 October 1887, and joined the Navy as a Boy 2nd Class on 27 July 1903. He was advanced to Boy 1st Class in March 1904, to Ordinary Seaman in October 1905, and to Able Seaman in July 1906. In February 1912, after his shooting success in the previous year, he was advanced to Leading Seaman. He served at sea during the Great War in Princess Royal and Queen Elizabeth, in which ship he was disrated in October 1918 and remained an Able Seaman for the rest of his service. He was discharged to ‘Shore’ and pensioned on 7 October 1927. His papers show that he was awarded the L.S. & G.C. medal but the date is illegible although probably 1921 or 1922. Sold with copied record of service.
