Victor Roland Potter was born in Shrub Hill, Worcestershire in March 1870. He joined the Royal Navy as an Acting Engine Room Artificer 4th Class in May 1895. Potter served with H.M.S. Aurora, February 1899 - March 1900, and H.M.S. Fox, June 1908 - April 1909 and October 1909 - July 1910. Having advanced to Engine Room Artificer 1st Class, Potter served with the battleship H.M.S. Prince George, July 1914 - November 1916. During the latter dates she served in the Dardanelles campaign. Potter’s subsequent service included with the destroyer H.M.S. Goshawk, 5 May -30 September 1916, during which time she was present at the Battle of Jutland. Potter was ‘Invalided’, 6 November 1918.
