George Henry Passmore was born in Dittisham, Devon in June 1869. He joined the Royal Navy as an Acting Engine Room Artificer 4th Class in November 1894. Passmore served with H.M.S. Doris, August 1898 - May 1901, and advanced to Chief Engine Room Artificer in March 1910. He served with H.M.S. Cornwall, August 1914 - February 1919, during which time she served at the Battle of the Falklands and during the Dardanelles campaign.
